Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (medium coat) : : Male : : Adult : : Medium
June 19, 2022 Rory has made progress in all areas since his original bio was written. Here's an update:
What a difference a couple of months can make. March 2, 2022 Rory is a 6 year old retired breeder from a farm in Ohio. His foster family thinks he is a sweet love muffin who wags his tail all day long. He has come a very long way in the past month, still needs to learn the rules of the house and have someone who is willing to work with him to adjust. He has already learned many appropriate behaviors while in foster care. Learning to walk on the leash has been a challenge. Sometimes he will take several steps and other times he will still resist. An adopter needs to continue to work on his confidence with being on a leash. He is very willing to please his human family in every way but needs their help to learn. Rory is with a group of other Cavaliers, loves being outside with the dogs, running around in the grass and playing catch with the other dogs. He seems to be afraid of the darkness at night and unsure of rain and windy days. All is new to him. With coaxing, praise and patience, he will make progress. Rory sleeps in a crate, next to two other Cavaliers. He has never had an accident in his crate. He has been around children so older, dog-savvy children might be OK with him. He loves to ride in the car. He is sweet, docile, cooperative and loving. Since his previous job was as a breeding stud, he still has some occasions when he will mount another dog but that is subsiding now that he has been neutered and with a verbal correction. He needs to realize that breeding is not his “job” anymore. He doesn’t know he is doing anything wrong. It is all he has known until now. He had 12 teeth extracted during his dental and neuter surgeries, is negative for brucellosis and HW and has been fully vaccinated. He falls asleep on his foster mom’s lap and enjoys being petted, kissed and hugged. He responds so well to praise and loves to be told he is a “good boy”. The challenges that Rory has are all very common of a newly rescued retired breeder who has not ever been a pet. They are the very typical rescue dog behaviors of anxiety and needing training to learn the expected behaviors for living in a home.
Rory requires a securely fenced yard as do all of our rescues. We will not ship dogs or entertain long distant adoptions so please be aware of his location in the Hudson Valley in NY before applying. If you can continue this boy’s rehabilitation and meet his needs, please complete the adoption application first, then contact Mary Coyne, mary401339@aol.com of your interest.
Thank you
