Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (medium coat) : : Female : : Adult : : Medium I would love you more than you can imagine.
Autumn is a 5 ½ year old ruby Cavalier, retired from a breeding kennel in Ohio. Patella luxation is a common condition and unless, the dog is lame or in obvious pain, we would not typically take to correct. Autumn’s left hind leg was so twisted that we took her to an orthopedic surgeon who rated it the worst, Grade 4. Blood work was taken and her low red blood cell count was borderline anemic so addition tests were run to rule out any autoimmune diseases or infectious diseases. Also ex-rays and ultrasounds screened out any conditions that would interfere with the bones healing from major surgery. This low reading is her "norm". Finally, in January she was cleared for surgery. Due to the severity of the malformation, the surgeon hoped the best he could do was a Grade 1. When she returned for her 6 week check, he was surprised and pleased to report that the surgery was more successful than he anticipated. There is no luxation, a Grade 0. That result was more than we expected at best. Autumn’s rehabilitation from surgery has been a long process, including heat treatments, range of motion exercises multiple times a day and very, very limited activity. She has spent much of her time in a pen with an orthopedic bed, no stairs, and no running loose in the yard. She is obviously feeling better but we have strictly followed the surgeon’s instructions to limit activity and give the bones ample time to heal. There are two pins in her knee which may or may not need to be removed at a future date. Her final 10 week checkup is April 1 when she will officially be cleared to resume all normal activity and boy is she ready to go. She has been a very good patient. Her other knee was rated a Grade 3 but is not causing any discomfort at this time. She receives glucosamine and omega 3 supplements daily.
Autumn is just the sweetest girl. She can be timid around new people. but quickly warms up to them. She gets along great with all of the other dogs in her foster home and loves to cuddle and be on a comfy sofa. She can be very vocal at mealtime and does have a loud bark. She definitely needs to work on her housebreaking because of her restrictions during rehab and she has not yet taken to using a leash. She has been spayed, had a dental and vaccinations.
In ordered to be considered for her adoption, you must have a securely fenced yard, (a physical fence), another canine companion in the home is also required. She loves attention and we prefer that she not be left alone all day. She has not been tested with children of any age or cats. She has not been around large dogs either, only other Cavaliers. Older respectful children would be fine but no toddlers. We do not support long distant adoptions. Autumn is being fostered in Maine so please consider that before applying and please read the requirements before applying. After you complete an application, please e-mail luckystarrescue@gmail.com of your interest.
