Cavalier King Charles Spaniel : : Female : : Adult : : Medium
Hazel is a lovely blenheim 5 year old girl with a heart of gold. She was released from a breeding facility and was quite overweight. She has been spayed and had a few teeth removed during her dental. No heart murmur was heard during her vet exams. She has some arthritis but her patellas are good. She has enjoyed her time with a loving foster and is ready for her forever home. With exercise and a special diet food Hazel has lost 8 pounds and that makes it so much easier to get around. She looks fantastic now at 23.5 lbs!
Amazing Hazel, as we call her, is docile and attentive, She is a quick learner who is not timid and reserved like you would expect of a dog just getting out of a puppy mill. Rather, she lights right up around unknown persons, other dogs and even cats. Just the sight of a new acquaintance puts a spring in her step and her tail a-wagging, she is eager to romp and play. Though she faithfully follows her person at home, in new environments she is curious to explore and will do so on her own, yet she will come when called. She is a great companion!
In just a couple of days after she arrived at her foster home, she learned to eat from a bowl, use stairs, and sleep on a soft surface.. Though at first resistant to a harness and leash, after just a couple weeks of “baby steps” she is now first in line for daily walks where she demonstrates her mastery of control, heeling and mindfulness of a professionally trained dog (with no effort on her foster’s part)...... unless she spies another dog along the way - then hold on! She’s jumping with puppy joy at the opportunity to meet a new friend. She is a really fun girl!
Hazel uses a pee pad when we are not home but is catching on to house training well. She patiently waits for her dinner and takes treats gently. Knows sit and sometimes, stay. She is not a barker. I have only heard her bark twice (in 4 months.)! The one thing she has not yet mastered is learning that she can jump up and onto the couch or into the car, Once helped to reach both places she quickly settles in quietly and comfortably. Picking her up to assist her to get where she's going is much easier now that she's lost weight! She has learned to use pet steps to get up on the couch. It has been a joy to foster her - Hazel is quite simply, one amazing dog.
Mature children over 8 years old are preferred. A companion dog(s) is required. A physically fenced yard with direct access to and from the house is required.
