Cavalier King Charles Spaniel : : Male : : Young : : Medium
UPDATE April 17, 2023 Artie is making excellent progress! He has become very affectionate and has improved with following commands such as sit and leave it. He came into rescue as a 7 month old distraught puppy and after7 months in foster, he is now a sweet and playful adult. He is like a completely different dog now. If you have thought about Artie or are just readlng about him for the first time, and would be interested in sharing your home with a spirited, smart boy please fill out an application and we can discuss Artie with you. Artie came into rescue from a family who could not keep him due to him not getting along with their older male dog. As a puppy until he was 7 mo old, this problem did not resolve. He was not aggressive toward any child or adult, just the other dog in the home. In his foster home he gets along with all but one of the dogs who is a male. He likes to play with the other fosters who are all females. Strategies both behavioral and medical have been helping but he still gets into spats (but shorter ones) with the male dog.
He was neutered soon after coming into to our rescue. He has been wearing a calming collar and his meds include: Solliquin calming chew, prozac, trazodone and gabapentin. He is fine a lot of the time but has these occasional outbursts of barking, growling and snapping but not biting the other male. For now, we feel that Artie would be best to start our as an only dog as he loves human attention and is very snuggly and affectionate. He loves to be in your lap.
Artie is 13 pounds of cuteness and sweetness who turns 1yr old Jan 30th. He is up to date on vaccinations and on heart worm prevention in addition to his other meds. He is very attentive, knows his name and is very curious. He runs fast and takes nice naps. He sleeps in bed with his foster and the other dogs as well as the other male. The negative behavior is triggered by food dog, or human or treats coming out and when he ends up crowded. He listens and knows sit. He is not fully house trained but making progress. He wears a belly band. Artie needs a dedicated and experienced owner that would help him to become a great pet as he matures.
He loves to go in the car. He likes to meet new people now that he is not as shy as he was when we got him. He barks at noises and needs reassurance as he becomes more confident.
If you have experience with this type of situation and/or feel you could handle Artie’s needs and would like to offer Artie a home where he can be comfortable and keep learning, please fill out an application. Full information and continued communication would be provided for the adopters. Please do not apply unless you have experience and the commitment to work with him.
He is being fostered in Ann Arbor, MI. He requires a securely fenced yard (no exceptions) and an experienced owner. Please complete an application, then contact Mary Coyne, mary401339@aol.com of your interest.
