Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (medium coat) : : Female : : Young
Sally, a shiny black and tan girl was relinquished from an Amish puppy farm when she was 6 months old because she was falling to her side and had spasms. The breeder said she had “fainting spells”. We sent out for a genetic DNA test that proved positive for the gene that is associated with Episodic Falling Syndrome. You can find info on this disorder online at https://www.cavalierhealth.org/episodic_falling.htm This syndrome is rare, only seen in Cavaliers and there is no cure for it. Anti seizure drugs are given to lessen the episodes even though the episodes are not seizures. The loss of ability to walk is due to muscle spasms. Sally is awake when this happens and is very happy when it stops. She appreciates being held and comforted while the episode plays itself out over 5-15 min average. Her vet started her on Clonazapam, in pill form, on September 3rd. The current dose of Clonazapam is now 2 ½ mg three times a day. She may need increases in the dosage depending on the frequency of the episodes and as she grows. After 1 month on the medication she has had less episodes and gained weight. Gradually her dosage will be increased by small increments to determine the dose she needs to override the episodes. The medicine has not affected her energy level at all. She actually seems more exuberant and more confident on the medication.
She has had her vaccines, blood work and spay. No other medical problems were found in her exam.
In spite of her disorder, Sally is an active, smart and very lovable girl. She is small, only weighing 7.4 lbs when we she came to us. She is now 9 months old and weighs 9.2 lbs. She was spayed recently and did fine. She loves to play with the other fosters as well as entertain herself with various toys when they get tired. It’s not just her tail that wags, but her entire body! She listens and usually comes when called. She sleeps well in the big bed cuddling with the other dogs or her foster mom.
Bringing this sweet adorable girl into your home comes with a big commitment. She needs her med 3-4 times per day on time, in order to prevent the episodes. Sally needs a home where someone is home most of the time. She likes people - barks at them at first and then wants them to hold her.Everyone who meets her falls in love with her! In between her puppy play, she loves to be curled up on a lap. She also needs a fenced yard and supervision when outside. The episodes come on suddenly, Once it ends she is her happy busy self.
We are looking for a home where Sally will get excellent care and attention. Another dog is required (preferably a play companion) and a securely fenced yard that is attached to the home. Experience with EFS would be a plus. Her special situation doesn’t stop her from being a wonderful dog.
