Candles of Hope, Peace and Joy burn brightly for You and Yours this holiday season!

The Gift of LucyWe were told she had 3 months to live. At 12 weeks of age, Lucy had so many holes in her heart, so many defects, the cardiologist was hard pressed to diagnose or define just one. "Just take her home and love her for the little time she has left," he told us. Now four years later, Lucy’s indomitable spirit burns brightly, casting a defining rainbow glow over our world. A commercial breeder’s throw away, Lucy was a sick pup unworthy of saving, unworthy of basic care and upkeep. How little this breeder knew... |
We often find ourselves reflecting on the gift of Lucy, wondering aloud why we were chosen to be the caretakers of this determined, high-spirited, loving, grateful, joyous little girl. Lucy just makes us better humans. As beneficiaries of Lucy’s unconditional love and eye-witnesses to her boundless exuberance for life, we strive to have hearts more like Lucy’s - hearts ever mindful of the joys that surround us - hearts that long to give more than take - hearts thankful for today while battling for a better tomorrow. Lucy daily steels our resolve to treasure the rejected, esteem the unwanted, and protect the endangered.
As an unstable 2008 draws to a close, our thoughts invariably turn to all the little Lucys threatened more so by these uncertain times. Economic hardships are prompting many commercial breeders to dispose of their unwanteds at county shelters or along isolated country roads. Still others chose an even more despicable fate for these innocent, voiceless victims - a bullet to the head on the secluded back forty. When the mass producers, those who have greedily profited at the expense of man’s most loyal friend, have so little regard for the value of life, is it any wonder that society mirrors the same self-centered, disposable attitude? Lucy reminds us that all are worthy. All deserve to be loved. All must be treated kindly, compassionately, respectfully.
Today we pray for a world we don’t yet see - a world where every Cavalier is safe, loved, and protected. Thanks to you, and your support of Lucky Star, this year saw more than 250 Cavaliers join the ranks of the free, the beloved, the wanted. We know that whatever the unique challenges of 2009, you will continue to be the safety net for Cavaliers in need. When finances are tight and there is no more room at the inn, Lucky Star relies on you to open your heart even more, stretch the money a little tighter, and make room for "just one more." And you always do. The Lucys of this world compel us to stand fast, inspire us to rise to every challenge, and provoke us into action to effect change. The Lucys of this world demand that we remain strong and consistent voices for those who deserve our unqualified protection.
When the task seems too daunting, the battle too demanding, may Lucy’s attitude become ours -
Where there’s a will...

Check out these (and more!) deserving Cavaliers on the "Rescues" Page
-
Melody – a beautiful, blenheim girl who came into rescue severely overweight at 36 pounds, but is now a svelte 20 pounds. Melody is 6 years old, and taking off the extra weight has given her a new lease on life – she loves every minute of it!! Melody is sure to bring extra sunshine into your life!
-
Prissy – a delightful, loving girl whose biggest issue is SHE SNORES! (don’t they all?!) Prissy does have a grade 1 murmur and some periodontal issues, but at 7 years old, is in extremely good physical health. She’s ready to share her heart full of love with a special family!
-
Kirby – a loving fellow who has come way too far to be ignored now! Kirby was completely ignored in the Missouri mill where he lived. His breeder left him to lie paralyzed in his pen. Kirby would have died last winter if Lucky Star had not stepped in. He has been to the chiropractor and has undergone water treatments for a herniated disc, and while Kirby may always have a bit of a limp, it doesn’t bother this grateful guy, so it shouldn’t bother you! At 7 years old, he is heart and eye clear! He so deserves a very special human to call his own!

Others with specific needs…..Tuesday, Marcus, Cooper, Tyra. All need special attention and love.
Please give your heart to the neediest!

Finally...A Name, Not A Cage Number
 |
She is no longer just a cage number. She is now a little girl with a name, a little girl whose life has immeasurable value - a little girl with babies on the way! These babies will be born into freedom, never having to suffer through and endure the horrors of puppy mill life - horrors their mother has known, and somehow, managed to survive. This little girl’s miserable, neglected life took a dramatic turn for the better last week thanks to the efforts of HSUS, Best Friends Animal Society, the Humane Society of Parkersburg, WV, and countless rescue organizations that were called in to help with the 1,000 dogs confiscated from Whispering Oaks, a puppy mill in Parkersburg. |
The gratitude of the rescued 29 Cavaliers was apparent in the tentative wagging tails that greeted volunteers who ministered to them during their brief stay at HSOP’s make-shift shelter, a warehouse in an industrial area of Parkersburg. While the loving touches they now receive are foreign, they are nonetheless welcomed and appreciated. It will take some time for most of these kids to trust. It will take time for them to realize that the human hands that minister to them now represent hands of hope and bright futures. Lucky Star Cavalier Rescue took in every one of the confiscated WV Cavaliers, leaving not a single one behind. These 29 Cavaliers have been transported to various areas of the country where they will receive thorough vetting before going into foster care. Please check back to see the appreciative faces of all these rescues and to find the little one that might fit perfectly into your waiting family. In the meantime, please open your pocketbooks and give generously to help pay the vet expenses on these 29 deserving Cavaliers. As you can imagine, the vet bill will be astronomical. We anticipate spending an average of $300 per Cavalier! It is only through the generous donations of Cavalier-loving folks like you that we are able to continue to help the ones that need us the most. Please help support the rescue of these 29 by sending a check to Lucky Star Cavalier Rescue today! Your donations are completely tax deductible – and these 29 will be forever grateful!Check out some of the faces of the WV freed below!Check out the "News" Section of the website for more information on the WV rescue. |

Eyes Tell The Story
Hi Fellow Cavalier lovers!
It has been a successful, banner year for Lucky Star -- and therefore, a WONDERFUL year for the dogs who have been saved and are now living the good life in homes filled with love and joy. Imagine what it must feel like to these rescues to finally have the human touch they crave, food enough to fill their bellies, treats and toys galore, soft beds to sleep in, sufficient medical care to address their health issues, and attentive, loving caretakers who truly know the meaning of respect for God’s creatures.
Unfortunately, there are many, many more Cavaliers who are still waiting for their chance at freedom. Many, many more who need us, long for us, wait for us. A puppy mill Cavalier’s eyes will tell his sad story – a story of neglect, abuse, fear, sickness. Thanks to you, the stories have been rewritten for many puppy mill survivors. If you have adopted a Lucky Star rescue, take a long, loving look into his eyes. Do you see gratitude, security, contentment? Oh, that all Cavaliers were blessed with those eyes! With your continued help, we can make it so!
Many more Cavaliers wait for us to find them, free them, and put the spark of a bright future back in their eyes.
Lucky Star’s ability to free our precious Cavaliers depends upon our financial ability to do so. We need your financial support – and we need it now! We have many Cavaliers waiting to be vetted and we need your help to accomplish that!
One of our goals as a rescue organization is to be able to place Cavalier rescues all over the country. Again, we need your help to accomplish that goal. We need many foster volunteers in every area of the country. We need volunteer transporters willing to give of their time (and gas money!) to help us get these precious rescues into foster care and adoptive homes. Please volunteer to help in any way you can! Fill out our online foster and transport applications. We can immediately put you to work for the dogs!
The downcast, fearful eyes of the puppy mill Cavalier plead with you to get involved today! Commit to changing the world today, one Cavalier at a time. After all, it’s up to us to be the change. It’s way too late to say, “I’ll cry about it tomorrow.” Please, pledge your support today.

Especially for Pets (http://www.especiallyforpets.com/), a pet store, created by pet lovers for pet lovers, has selected Lucky Star to be the recipient of the toenail clipping donations from their six stores in MA for the fourth quarter of 2008. If you live in the area, please visit one of their stores (Newton, Sudbury, Wayland, Westborough, Acton & Medway) to have your pet’s nails clipped and your donation will go to help some very deserving Cavaliers.
